News Bits from Snehalaya - Guwahati
HOME, SWEET HOME!

Family is a place where the children belong to and they have the right for parental care in an atmosphere of peace, joy and security.  Reuniting lost or run-away children with their families, is one of the priority services of Snehalaya. Out of the 47 children contacted from February to April 2010, 24 were reunited with their parents or guardians immediately. Some are under counseling in preparation for reunion and others will have to stay in Snehalaya for a period of time. Sad to say, not all homes are sweet homes!

Rani (name changed) aged 15 was brought to Guwahati by an eunuch from Bokajan on the pretext of giving her employment. The staff of Child Assistance Booth spotted these two at the Guwahati Railway Station and brought them first to the police (GRPF) and then to the Child Welfare Committee. The child was given temporary shelter by Snehalaya. Snehalaya was able to contact her guardian. After a week when no one has arrived, the Staff of Snehalaya took the young girl to her home and after due counseling handed her over.

Jyoti (name changed) a girl of 12 was found at Guwahati Railway Station. She said that she was traveling with her Aunty from Hojai but got separated in the train and she landed up in Guwahati. Her parents were traced out and then came to know that she was kept as a domestic help in a house and she ran away from there and got lost. Anyway, Jyoti is now back at home.

Sureya (name changed), a girl child of 7 years was found at Guwahati Railway Station by one of the staff of Child Assistance Booth. The child said that she arrived in Guwahati by train all by herself.  On another occasion she said that she was accompanied by her Aunty or put into the train by Aunty. The social workers of Snehalaya put their best effort and traced the guardians of the child.  Sikha Bhuyan made a visit to Jagirod with the child and was able to trace the child’s home. There she met the child’s guardians.  Sikha was told by the neighbours that Sureya was constantly being abused by her mother and was made to do plenty of household work. The physical appearance of the girl also speaks of not being looked after properly. So the guardians of the child were asked to attend the Child Welfare Committee meeting. In the meeting they revealed the fact that they are not her real parents and that she is the child of a relative who is insane who had left the child with them after birth and whose whereabouts are not known. After counseling the step-parents understood the reason why the child ran away. They promised not to use corporal punishment to discipline the child. With the final interaction with the child and the guardian it was clear that they were willing to keep the child and treat her well. So, Sureya was handed over.
